Parenting & Family Therapy in La Quinta, California
For families who love each other, but keep getting caught in the same patterns of conflict, reactivity, and disconnection.
When one part of the family feels overwhelmed, the whole system feels it.
Family life has a way of bringing everything to the surface: stress, old patterns, different parenting styles, big emotions, and the parts of ourselves we swore we wouldn't repeat.
Sometimes it's a child who's struggling. Sometimes the tension is between parents. Sometimes everyone seems a little more reactive, disconnected, or stretched thin, and no one is quite sure how to get back to each other.
You might be noticing:
More conflict, shorter fuses, or everyone walking on eggshells
A child who's acting out, shutting down, or having a harder time regulating
You and your partner getting stuck around parenting decisions
Old family patterns showing up in ways you didn't expect
A sense that your home just doesn't feel as connected as you'd like it to
Family therapy isn't about figuring out who's causing the problem. We look at what's happening between you, and what each person may be needing underneath it.
Therapy for Parents
Parenting can feel isolating, even when you’re surrounded by people. You might second-guess yourself, Google late at night, or wonder why this feels harder than you expected.
Sometimes the most helpful place to start isn’t with your child; it’s with you.
Through therapy for parents, we can slow down what’s happening in the moments that feel hardest: the tantrum that sends your nervous system through the roof, the bedtime battle you’re already dreading, the guilt after you react in a way you didn’t mean to, or the worry that you’re somehow getting it wrong.
We may explore:
• What your child’s behavior may be communicating
• Why certain behaviors or stages feel especially activating for you
• How your own upbringing shows up in the way you parent
• Regulation and co-regulation when emotions run high
• Parenting stress, burnout, resentment, and the invisible mental load
• How you and your partner can feel more like a team
You don’t need to become a perfectly regulated parent. The goal is to understand what’s happening underneath the reaction, in your child and in you , so you have more choice in what happens next.
My Approach to Family Therapy
Families rarely come to therapy because one person is “the problem.” More often, everyone has gotten caught in a pattern that makes sense individually, but isn’t working very well together.
In family therapy, I’m paying attention to what happens between you: who gets louder, who shuts down, who tries to keep the peace, who feels misunderstood, and what everyone may be protecting underneath those reactions.
We might slow down a conversation that usually escalates in seconds. We might notice the role one person has quietly taken on in the family. We might help a parent respond differently to a child who is struggling, or make room for something the family hasn’t known how to talk about.
Depending on what your family needs, sessions may include the whole family, parents together, individual family members, or a combination of these.
My work is informed by Emotionally Focused Therapy, attachment and family systems work, child development and play, and trauma-informed, nervous-system-aware care. But the goal isn’t to fit your family into a model.
It’s to help you understand what keeps happening between you, and create enough safety and flexibility for something different to happen.
Family therapy doesn’t have to start with a crisis.
Sometimes you just know that the way things have been going isn’t how you want your family to feel.
You want less reactivity. More understanding. More room to actually hear each other. And maybe a little more confidence that when things get hard, you can find your way back.
You don’t have to have everything figured out before you begin.

I’m Sophie Bain-Tohl, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and the founder of Haven Wellness Therapy.
I’m also a wife, a mom, an adoptee, and someone who knows that families can be loving, complicated, messy, protective, hilarious, and hard, sometimes all at once.
Those parts of my life don’t replace my clinical training, but they absolutely shape the kind of therapist I am. I’m interested in what’s happening underneath the behavior, what people are trying to protect, and the patterns families can get caught in even when everyone genuinely loves each other.
I tend to be warm, curious, and pretty direct. I’m not going to sit silently and watch your family have the same argument you have at home. I’ll help slow it down, notice what’s happening, and sometimes ask the question that gets us underneath the argument entirely.

Therapy with me is active and collaborative.
We might slow down a conversation as it’s happening. I may point out a pattern I’m noticing, ask someone to try saying something differently, or help you notice what happened inside you just before you shut down, snapped, or went into fix-it mode.
Sometimes we’ll laugh. Sometimes I’ll interrupt you. Sometimes I’ll ask a question that takes a minute to answer.
You don’t need to show up knowing exactly what’s wrong or who needs to change. We’re looking at what happens between you, and what becomes possible when someone does something different.
I offer in-person sessions in La Quinta and online therapy throughout California.
Frequently Asked Questions
Whether you're looking for family therapy, family counseling, or support navigating parenting challenges, you don't have to wait until your family is in crisis to reach out.
-
You don’t need to be in crisis for family therapy to be helpful. Families often come in when the same conflicts keep repeating, communication feels strained, a child is struggling, or something simply feels off at home. We can use a consultation to talk through what’s happening and whether family therapy feels like the right place to start.
-
Not necessarily. Depending on what’s happening, I may meet with the whole family, parents together, individual family members, or some combination of these. We’ll decide together what makes the most sense rather than assuming everyone needs to be in every session.
-
Children don’t exist separately from the relationships around them, which is why I often involve parents in the work. Sometimes that means meeting with your child; sometimes the most meaningful change happens through work with the parents. We’ll look at what your child may be communicating and what is happening within the family as a whole.
-
That’s okay. Everyone doesn’t have to arrive equally convinced or comfortable. Part of the work can be making room for different perspectives without deciding that one person is right and another is the problem.
